Today was a beautiful day for riding a bicycle. It was cool, the sky was blue and we had a wind at our left rear for most of the day. The full moon was out this morning. Our first stop was in White, South Dakota. Everyone in the store was talking with a Minnesota accent.Continue reading “Day 31 A Honey of a Place to Bee”

Day 30 Extra Large Pheasant
Overnight a front blew through so this morning was overcast with light rain. The wind shifted to the Northwest. We only had a few miles of rain. Mostly it just sprinkled and barely made the pavement wet. Here is Chad with his rain kit on. His helmet cover makes him look like David Beckman don’tContinue reading “Day 30 Extra Large Pheasant”
Day 29 Miller 29 Miles
Today was much like yesterday. You could hear the wind whistling outside when we woke up. Again, the wind was blowing from the South. There wasn’t much to see for the first 45 miles. No towns, no billboards, nothing. Just a few ranch entrances here and there. After Wessington Springs we got to turn northContinue reading “Day 29 Miller 29 Miles”
Day 28 Pioneer Auto
When the Best Western Breakfast Lady in Murdo found out where we were heading she warned us about chipseal. “They started in Vivian,” she said cheerfully. “The chipseal is supposed to go to Reliance but I don’t know how far along they are.” Wonderful – not only do we get to contend with strong SoutherlyContinue reading “Day 28 Pioneer Auto”
Day 27 Bison Skulls For Sale
This morning we left in the dark at 5 am because we had big miles, high winds were in the forecast, and we were going to lose an hour due to entering the central time zone. Unfortunately, we rode through the main part of the Badlands in the dark. The sky was clear, the starsContinue reading “Day 27 Bison Skulls For Sale”
Day 26 Donkey Food
Leaving Keystone and the Black Hills this morning we went up and down a lot of short hills. At Rapid City our route took us on Skyline Drive which overlooked the city. Nice view! Rapid City was about 25 miles from Keystone and ended up being the only town with services today. Scenic, South DakotaContinue reading “Day 26 Donkey Food”
Day 25 Rest Day
We spent the day in Keystone, South Dakota while following our rest and recovery guidelines. Since Mt. Rushmore was only 3 miles away Herb, Chad and I pedaled up there in the morning to see it again. The sculpture is still impressive and hasn’t changed. Dad and Bicycles Dad’s first multi-day ride was SAGBRAI (SecondContinue reading “Day 25 Rest Day”
Day 24 Cyclists Chasing Cows
Today’s ride was epic. Shortly after leaving our hotel we turned onto the Mickelson Trail. It is an old Burlington Northern railroad bed that goes through the heart of the Black Hills in South Dakota. There were all types of rock formations. Low hanging clouds and early morning fog added to the drama. The trailContinue reading “Day 24 Cyclists Chasing Cows”
Day 23 Testicle Festival
We left the red rocks of Hulett, Wyoming with an overcast sky and chilly temperatures. We did have a few drops of rain a couple of times today. Early in the morning Chad captured a real cowboy in action. I finally found real haystacks. We visited the Vore Buffalo Jump. Plains Indians used the buffaloesContinue reading “Day 23 Testicle Festival”
Day 22 Crazy Woman Campground
Here is the gang getting ready to leave our hotel in Gillette, Wyoming. As we were leaving Gillette we passed the Crazy Woman Campground. Not surprisingly, the campground was full. Outside of Gillette we saw a huge rail yard. Using higher order math, Chad estimates that there were over 400 locomotives parked in the yard.Continue reading “Day 22 Crazy Woman Campground”
